Dean was full of the positivity of the budding new season, and with a more powerful arsenal than what he has boasted over the last two terms, he is looking forward to the challenges and thrills that lie ahead.

“It is always a wonderful time as the worst of the rain and cold is now behind us and we look to get the sun on their backs and watch the youngsters find their feet and get into their stride.”

He explained that the DKR KZN travelling party had arrived at Milnerton from the SA Champions Season battlefield  on 1 August and that the housekeeping tasks of vaccinations and innoculations had been completed during what is traditionally the wettest month in the Mother City.

“We have had our KZN runners, but here in Cape Town we have focussed on laying the foundation for the summer that lies ahead. So I expect to up the ante in the next few weeks. And I am proud and privileged to say that we have enjoyed some excellent support from our loyal existing clients and some new faces in the DKR family, to the extent that I have more youngsters this time than I have had in the past few seasons.”

With the national focus on the forthcoming Cape Summer season and the best horses in South Africa expected to do battle from October to February, Dean will be spending more time at Milnerton from this week and expects to get some of his youngsters out on the Durbanville grass for gallops this coming Thursday.

He said that despite the tough times endured and the challenges facing racing, the support had been fantastic and that he had managed to find some excellent value at last month’s National 2yo Sale.

“I am encouraged by the well-bred quality stock that we have amongst our younger horses. The fact that we also had Equus Nominees in the 2yo ranks in the shape of Cosmic Highway and Waterberry Lane, is heartening and exciting as we look ahead to the classics. I have some really smart young horses, and while some still have to go out and show us that they are as good as we believe they are, I am very positive.”

Dean said that the DK Racing Syndicate had achieved some excellent results in its few years of existence.

“It’s a really great way of having fun for reasonable money and no hassles. We have reduced shares to 5%  (at around R28 000 which includes keep for a year), and there has been terrific interest in the smashingly bred and conformed William Longsword colt that we bought at Nationals last month. We also have a few shares available in a smashing Quasillo colt, that will race in a partnership. A lovely athletic specimen!”
